Cabotage Cabotage is the commercial carriage of goods within one state by a road haulage operator established in another state. In EU road transport it is subject to specific Union rules.
Carrier A person who undertakes to carry goods by land, on rivers or on other inland waterways under section 425 UGB.
CMR CMR is the international Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road. It governs paid cross-border road carriage where the place of taking over and the place of delivery are in different countries and at least one of them is a contracting country.
Consignment note A consignment note records the essential details of the carriage and the goods being transported.
Custody liability Custody liability in carriage law describes the carrier’s liability for loss of or damage to goods between taking them over and delivering them. Section 429 of the Austrian UGB allows the carrier to establish that the loss, damage or delay could not have been prevented by the care of an ordinarily diligent carrier.

Delivery deadline A delivery deadline is the period within which the goods are to be delivered. Under the CMR rules for road carriage, it is based on the agreed period or, if none was agreed, on a reasonable carriage time.

Freight forwarder A freight forwarder arranges consignments in its own name for the account of the consignor through carriers or sea carriers under section 407 UGB.

Incoterms Incoterms® are standardised delivery terms issued by the International Chamber of Commerce. In a sale contract between seller and buyer, they allocate key costs, obligations and delivery risk, but do not replace the rest of the contract or the rules governing the carrier.

Reservation A reservation at delivery records that the consignee does not accept an identified loss or damage without objection.

Special drawing rights Special drawing rights (SDRs) are an international reserve asset created by the International Monetary Fund. In CMR law, they serve as the unit of account, particularly for the liability limit for loss of or damage to goods.
