Consignment note

A consignment note is a transport document that records the essential details of the contract of carriage and the goods. In international carriage of goods by road under the CMR Convention, it confirms the contract of carriage. The absence, irregularity or loss of the consignment note does not, by itself, affect the existence or validity of the contract.

Under section 426 of the Austrian Commercial Code (UGB), the carrier may demand that a consignment note be issued. It should include details such as the place and date of issue, the carrier, the consignee, the place of delivery, the nature and quantity of the goods, accompanying documents, freight charges and special agreements. The sender is liable to the carrier for the accuracy and completeness of the information entered in the consignment note.
